EXCELLENCE AT POLITECNICO: DESIGN AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Located in Milano, a major world design capital; the Design School of Politecnico di Milano involves 5000 students and over 500 teaching staff, and is a meeting point of different cultures, linking architectural and artistic studies, to technical, scientific and engineering studies. With a comparable basis of about 3000 students and over 300 teaching staff, the Information Engineering School is a world-class scientific institution, committed to forefront research, education, and technology transfer, with a tradition of excellence in fundamental research, an increasing engagement into interdisciplinary research, and a clear vision of its role and mission in “inventing the future”. Both the design and computer engineering schools ranks as first within Italy and within the top-10 in Europe according to the QS Ranking, 2016.

BRIDGING THE TWO CULTURES: INTERNAL ERASMUS

In the new millennium, with the spread of digital technology, designers no longer regard their job as designing physical artifacts —beautiful or utilitarian—only, but as designing digital services and digital interactions with it; conversely, computer engineers discover that adding design quality to digital products is a fundamental ingredient for their success. The creation of an interdisciplinary study program culture that bridges design thinking and information engineering knowledge and practice is particularly timely, yielding to a significant cultural enrichment of the future graduates in both schools. As an experimental program, starting in the 2016 Academic Year, we give to Design and Information Engineering students the opportunity of an “Internal Erasmus”, an  exchange program between the two schools, which will broaden their skills and boost their creativity, enabling them to address more effectively the innovation challenges of modern society.
